This policy describes what Dunbar collects, why, and how you can see or delete it. Dunbar is operated by Story Ventures. Questions go to hello@askdunbar.com.
What Dunbar is
Dunbar is a service you reach by text message and email. You tell it about the people in your life, and it remembers, reminds you, and drafts messages for you to send. There is no app.
What we collect
- Messages you send to Dunbar. Texts, emails, forwarded messages, voice notes, and screenshots you choose to send. These are the source of everything Dunbar remembers.
- What Dunbar derives from them. Facts, dates, and reminders about the people you describe, each linked back to the message it came from.
- Your phone number and email address. Used to identify you and to reach you. Your first text to Dunbar is your consent to receive messages from it.
- Data from accounts you connect. If you connect Google, Dunbar accesses only the scopes you approve, for the purposes described at the time you connect. See the Google section below.
- Delivery and usage records. Whether a message was delivered, when you opened a link Dunbar sent you, and errors needed to keep the service working.
What we do not do
- Dunbar never messages your contacts from its own number or address.
- Dunbar never reads an account you have not connected.
- Dunbar never sells your data or uses it for advertising.
- Dunbar does not use your data to train general-purpose machine learning models.
How we use it
To remember what you tell us, to remind you at the right time, to draft messages you approve before they are sent, and to keep the service reliable and secure. Drafts are produced with the help of third-party language model providers under agreements that prohibit training on your data.
Google user data
If you connect a Google account, Dunbar’s use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. In particular, Dunbar only uses Google user data to provide and improve the features you have enabled, does not transfer it except as necessary to provide those features or as required by law, does not use it for advertising, and does not allow humans to read it except with your consent, for security purposes, or to comply with law.
Sharing
We share data only with the service providers needed to run Dunbar: messaging carriers, email delivery, hosting, and language model providers. Each is bound to use it only to provide its service to us. We disclose data when required by law.
Retention and deletion
Dunbar keeps what you have told it until you remove it. You can ask Dunbar to forget a person, a fact, or a message at any time, and you can delete your account by asking. Deletion removes your data from active systems promptly and from backups within 30 days. Audio and images you send are deleted on a shorter schedule after their text has been extracted.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Access by our team is limited, logged, and only for operating the service or with your consent.
Children
Dunbar is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
